Potatoes

Potatoes are another easy crop – other than the daily picking of Colorado Potato Beetles! Even though they are cheap to purchase, growing unusual varieties is the only way to get most. Potatoes can be hit or miss depending upon care provided and the weather. This year 9 varieties were planted in two different beds. 2.5 pounds of each were planted

The smaller bed (below) had Yukon Gold (8 lbs), Purple Sun (9.5 lbs), Harvest Moon (6 lbs), and Huckleberry Gold (3 lbs). Yukon produced some very large tubers, but also many mediums. Purple Sun was many mediums while the other two were mainly smalls.

In the larger bed (above) were Purple Viking (21 lbs), Mountain Rose (15 lbs), Adirondack Blue (14.5 lbs), Adirondack Red (13.5 lbs), and Purple Majesty (14 lbs). Vikings were mainly large the rest mainly mediums. The larger bed had less Beetle pressure which likely accounts for the larger harvests.
